Storage locks and padlocks protect your storage units

Storage Units are everywhere; some are located in large buildings and are climate controlled They all have one thing in common, they need a storage lock.  Others have exterior storage for boats and trailers.  You rent these storage units by the month or year and then you put your own storage lock on the door, usually a padlock.  If you don’t have your own storage lock the storage company will have locks that you can purchase.  Make sure that the storage lock is the first thing that you think of and not the last.

So, what should you consider when locking up your storage unit?  As you consider the following always keep this in the back of your mind: what is the value of the “Stuff” you are putting into your storage unit.

  • If your unit is outside bring a padlock that is rated for weather resistance
  • Bring your own padlock rather than buying one from the storage company
  • Do not give an extra key to the storage unit management
  • Always keep track of your keys
  • Purchase the best lock that you can afford
  • Consider purchasing a padlock from an Authorized Service Center if you need a very secure padlock
  • What is the value of the stuff you are going to put into your storage unit?
  • Does your homeowner or renter insurance cover the items in your storage unit?
  • Consider buying insurance from the storage company

Storage LockSometimes we look at the items that are in our storage unit and we think that there is not much monetary value.  But what about the emotional or sentimental value?  You could have items that have no value to someone else, but they would be irreplaceable to you.  Sometimes the sentimental value of the items in your storage unit is worth much more that the monetary value.  These items should be protected with as much vigor as the high value items.

The only thing between your stuff and the bad guys who want to steal your stuff is your storage lock or padlock.  So it’s very important to pay close attention to your lock.  When you are at the storage unit look at all the locks on the other units, you will find that a lot of them look exactly like yours.  The next question should be “I wonder if any of those keys will open my lock?”  That’s why you purchase locks from an Authorized Center they can provide an exclusive key that only you have.

Always remember to pay your storage bill, if not, the storage unit has the right to auction off your stuff.
