Tip: Measuring a lock cylinder – Life Unlocked

Some Klevio installations require our installers to replace the cylinder in a customer’s lock. In this video, our installer Farhan shows you how to correctly take out and measure a cylinder.

Some Klevio installations require a cylinder with an emergency feature that allows you to insert keys into it from both ends simultaneously. If the existing cylinder doesn’t comply with this requirement, Klevio can supply a replacement with the same measurements.

In order to measure your cylinder, you will require a screwdriver and a ruler or tape measure.

STEP 1 – Remove the cylinder bolt

You can identify the cylinder bolt for being in line with the cylinder as you look at the door side-on. Remove the bolt entirely with the appropriate screwdriver.

STEP 2 – Use a key or thumbturn to rotate the cylinder until it comes loose

If you’re using a key, simply insert it into one side and rotate it for about 30 degrees until it becomes loose. At that point, you can remove the cylinder from the lock completely.

STEP 3 – Measure the removed cylinder and its midpoint

Take your ruler or tape measure and hold it up tightly to the side of the cylinder. The length of a cylinder is defined by its midpoint, which is usually identified by a vertical segment. Measure both ends to the left and right of the midpoint.

A 80mm long cylinder with its midpoint at the center would have a length of 40-40. You can also come across an asymmetrical cylinder, for example a different 80mm long cylinder could also have a length of 45-35.
